Roma 28 April 2006: "I have today filed a new application for compassionate release for Ronald Biggs. It seems to me that the criteria is more than met for Mr. Biggs to be released. It cannot be justified that he is kept in prison simply because the NHS cannot provide the same facilities as the Prison Service and neither can it be justified to maintain Mr Biggs in prison because of a potential public outcry at his release whilst the Home Office release 1500 foreigners into the community all of whom have committed far more recent and dangerous than a 78 year old man, bedridden that cannot walk, talk, or move. Over 5000 letters have been received to support his release. It would be a complete tragedy and scandal if Mr Biggs were allowed to die in prison whilst non british Nationals have been allowed unmonitored and unconditional early release! I call upon Mr Charles Clarke without further delay to release Mr Biggs forthwith."
