Roma 24 May 2006: "I am pleased that Pakistan has stayed the execution of Mirza Hussein. I am releasing today the letters and application submitted to the Chief Justice of Pakistan in this matter. Leaving quite apart my own abhorrance for capital punishment this case was about the incompatability of the Pakistan Constitution with a retrial post an acquittal. The Pakistan Judiciary and the Presidency are to be congratulated in applying the law as opposed to interpreting the Constitution."
